As a workaround for SM-2301, we added {{joda-time}} to the {{startup.properties}} file. Once we upgrade to Karaf 2.3.6, we should be able to remove the workaround again.

After removing the the {{joda-time}} from {{startup.properties}} the problem described in SM-2301 happens again (with Karaf {{2.3.5}} it worked). Moreover, after setting {{respectStartLvlDuringFeatureStartup=false}} the problem doesn't occur anymore.

I can't reproduce this problem in {{5.0.x}}. This problem should happen after upgrade to ActiveMQ {{5.9.1}} in {{5.0.x}} too. There was this option never set to {{true}}.

Has been the logic of {{respectStartLvlDuringFeatureStartup}} changed in Karaf {{2.3.6}}?

I tried to downgrade to Karaf {{2.3.5}} and the problem seems to be solved. Something has been changed in Karaf {{2.3.6}}

One additional observation: it was interesting for me why this problem doesn't occur in {{5.0.x}}. I have downgraded Camel and ActiveMQ to versions used in {{5.0.x}} and it fixed the problem. Next I have upgraded Camel to {{2.13.0}} and the problem came back. Many Camel features use joda bundle {{2.3.x}} and {{1.6.x}}. Probably something has been changed in Camel {{2.13.x}} and the obr resolver forces usage of the version {{1.6.x}} which causes our problem.

The problem is solved after changing the version of {{joda-time}} bundle in ActiveMQ's {{activemq}} feature from {{1.6.2}} to {{2.3}}. We can open an issue in ActiveMQ and propose the upgrade.

I would also use in our features the original {{joda-time}} bundles instead of the ServiceMix bundle, like Camel and ActiveMQ.

removing from feature boot joda-time feature and using

* activemq 5.9.1
* camel 2.13.0
* karaf 2.3.6-SNAPSHOT
and use equinox as osgi framework

activiti feature works for me.
Could you try it ?. If it is ok for you too we need to address or understand the problem
on felix side

Indeed, changing the framework to {{equinox}} solves the problem. There should be a difference between {{felix}} and {{equinox}}. We should try to understand the difference. But the default framework should be still {{felix}}

Using {{5.1.x}} branch and removing all {{joda-time}} reference from the feature boot
and feature definition, I noticed that typing from a clean env the following command

* features:install -r activiti (without refesh)
* refresh listed bundle in the correct order
Activiti example works for me

I just try to see what changes from Karaf side
